Why Use PCR Plastic?

PCR (Post-Consumer Recycled) plastic refers to materials recovered from post-consumer sources such as daily-use chemicals, appliances, and automotive parts after they have served their initial purpose. In contrast, PIR (Post-Industrial Recycled) plastic is derived from industrial waste generated during manufacturing—including scrap, off-spec products, and sprues—which is recycled directly within the factory. The key difference lies in their sources: PCR addresses the massive volume of plastic waste generated by consumers, helping reduce environmental pollution on a large scale. If not recycled, these plastics contribute significantly to pollution each year. PCR materials provide a sustainable solution, and many policies now encourage their use. For instance, the UK’s HMRC has introduced a plastic packaging tax of £200 per ton on packaging with less than 30% recycled content. In China, corporate social responsibility mandates also drive brands to adopt PCR plastics, making them an increasingly vital part of global sustainability efforts.
